We build worlds, by constructing a living breathing universe in which these stories unfold. These worlds possess their own history, cultures, and belief systems, By harmoniously blending these elements, storytellers captivate their readers and create enduring narratives that leave an indelible mark on the collective imagination. We will read from our own work, along with passages from authors like Ursula LeGuin and Madeline Miller.\nBarbara Newman has always been a storyteller, first in the ad world where she wrote short stories, (very short stories,) 30 second commercials for iconic global brands. After hearing an NPR interview about the American cowgirl, she was so inspired, she left Madison Avenue for Montana to write and produce a doc film about their lives. Now her writing has taken a new form. Most recently, Barbara wrote the award-winning eco-fantasy, The Dreamcatcher Codes. She is at work on her second book.\n \nJana Laiz believes in magic. Her writing reflects an understanding of the worlds within worlds, the place many writers dwell. Her eco-fantasy novel, The Twelfth Stone emerged out of an intimate view into these worlds and her studies of the faerie folktales of Scotland and Ireland. She is the author of the award-winning novels Weeping Under This Same Moon, “A Free Woman On God’s Earth,” The True Story of Elizabeth Mumbet Freeman, and more. Visit her at janalaiz.com ( http://janalaiz.com/ ).\n \nUse Your Words brings writers, readers, and listeners together for evenings of sharing and conversation. Each date will be hosted by a different local writer, with readings by colleagues, students, writing groups, published authors, and storytellers. Themes will include Emergence, Grief, Creaturely Stories, Lives Gone Off Script, True Tales, Memoirs, and more. The hosts will open conversations around each evening’s themes, but also talk about writing practices, writing groups, and other skills to empower the art of writing and to encourage reading.\nDewey Drop-In: Use Your Words dates, hosts, and themes:\n11/01/2023 Sheela Clary: True Tales of Lives Lived\n12/06/2023 Beth Robbins and Hanna Van Sickle; Literature and Loss\n \nDewey Drop-In (DDI) Wednesday night series includes:\nFirst Wednesdays: Use Your Words, writing, readings, and storytelling\nSecond Wednesdays: Jazz Jams hosted by Brian Kantor w/ bandleader Luke Franco (participants and audience welcome)\nThird Wednesdays: Show & Tell, a music and art soireé hosted by Michael Lesko\nFourth Wednesdays: Game Nights with hosts Maggie McRae and Michael Siktberg.
