Summer Book Club: The Underdogs by Marino Azuela

Join Clark staff and fellow book lovers for lively in-person discussions of three different books related to the summer’s exhibitions. Works by Honoré de Balzac, Marino Azuela, and Rebecca Solnit provide new insights into the summer special exhibitions, Rodin in the United States: Confronting the Modern, José Guadalupe Posada: Symbols, Skeletons and Satire, and Tauba Auerbach and Yuji Agematsu: Meander. Each meeting is free, but capacity is limited, so please RSVP for each meeting you would like to attend. Reservations open one month before each meeting. All novels are available in English translations, and copies will be available for purchase in the Clark’s Museum Store.

The summer book club series continues with Mariano Azuela’s The Underdogs, translated by Sergio Waisman. Mariano Azuela’s powerful novel about the Mexican Revolution (1910-20) provides a lens through which to view the popular prints of illustrator José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913). Posada lived to see the beginnings of a Revolution that transformed Mexican government and culture.
